Healthy changes made in south city

When South City Pharmacy owner Steve Jo goes to work each morning, it is with one thing in mind – to help his customers.

But Steve has the belief that good health comes from more than simply medicines – he takes a more holistic approach.

Which meant taking over ownership of the café beside the pharmacy was a perfect fit.

Formerly the Stamping Ground Café, the eatery has just been rebranded as The Good Fix.

It focuses on providing customers with the choice to have healthy but delicious food options, but it has also taken the service a bit further, offering a lunch box delivery service. For $10 you get a sandwich, salad and juice or smoothie, delivered.

Steve believes removing barriers to healthy eating is key to people adopting healthy lifelong habits. Offering the delivery service is one way of doing that, he believes.

‘’It’s not about doing the clean eating for a few weeks … we are building life long healthy habits.’’

While he recognised that making changes could be daunting, starting small was a good start, he says.

He believed the lunch box delivery service was the only of its kind operating in Invercargill.

‘’We saw the gap in the community that people needed this.’’

Businesses had a community responsibility to make sure their customers were looked after, and that was particularly relevant in the health sector, Steve says.

‘’It’s rewarding for me that people are accepting those healthy changes. They come back and tell me about it. That’s really cool.’’

He also hoped the work his team were doing at the pharmacy and café would fit in with the great things being done at nearby The Pantry.

‘’We want to provide the synergetic effect on the community.’’

The Good Fix chef Sam Palmer was instrumental in helping bring in the healthy food options.

‘’It’s about providing people with healthy food that they otherwise wouldn’t get,’’ she said.

Healthy Families Invercargill manager Jared Cappie said it was great to see businesses in Invercargill showing leadership when it came to making the healthy choice the easy choice.

‘’Our community needs leaders such as Steve. By setting this great example, sustainable, healthy changes can be made, which will benefit everyone.’’
