A return to the fun activities of yesteryear (and a few from today) will be on offer at a family fun day being held at Murihiku Marae this month.
The event, which is being organised by marae staff with the support of the Sport Southland team, will be held on Saturday February 24 from 10.30am until 2pm.
Among the activities on offer will be sack racing, three legged races, bumper ball, a giant waterslide, face painting, and games.
The activities will be nestled amongst the grounds at the marae, on Tramway Road.
Kaumatua Cyril Gilroy said the fun day would be a great way for people of all ages and walks of life, Maori and non-Maori, to enjoy the marae.
‘’We want people to come and be part of our marae community and have some fun with their families and friends.’’
The marae and its beautiful gardens were there for the whole community to enjoy, and it was great to be able to offer people the opportunity to come and be part of that, he said.
The activities had been specifically chosen to help people have fun at true grassroots level – without the need for money, or technology such as mobile phones, and the day had been designed so it was completely informal, and simply all about having fun.
‘’It’s just about enjoying this amazing community facility, connecting with the community, and having fun,’’ he said.
A tour of the wharenui (meeting house) will be held in the afternoon.
So bring your picnic, your water bottle, and your family and friends and come and join in the fun.
